Here is the Radio Logic puzzle and answer that appeared on page 3 of the Sep/Oct/Nov 2001 Issue of the MARC newsletter

Every Saturday, Jeff contacts his friends on his radio. Last week Jeff chatted with five friends who each had a different type of radio and antenna. From the information provided, determine the order in which Jeff made contact, and the type of radio (one is a Swan) and antenna each friend used for the QSO contact.

1. The men contacted were: the one who had the Icom, the one with
the quad antenna, and the one who was the third QSO

2. Either the Kenwood or the Icom was owned by Tom, and the other radio was owned by the person who had the vertical antenna. The owners of the other three rigs were Linda, the owner of the dipole, and the one who was the fifth contact.

3. One woman was the fourth QSO, while the other woman used a beam antenna.

4. Sally did not own the Yaesu.

5. Either Jim or owner of the rhombic antenna had the Alinco, and the other had the Kenwood.

6. Bob was not the second contact.

Solution:

The man who had the Icom (1) didn't have the quad (1), dipole (2), beam (3), or rhombic (5); he had the vertical. He isn't Tom (2) or Jim (5); he's Bob [the only man left]. Tom had the Kenwood (2), so had the rhombic antenna, and Jim had the Alinco (5). Sally did not have the Yaesu (4); Linda did. Sally had the Swan. The one who had the quad isn't Sally or Linda (1); he's Jim. Linda didn't have the dipole (2); Sally did. Linda had the beam, so Sally was the fourth contact (3). Bob [Icom] was not the third contact (1), fifth (2), or the second (6); he was the first. Linda [beam] wasn't the third (1) or fifth (2) contact; she was the second. Jim [quad] wasn't the third (1) contact; Tom was. Jim was the fifth contact.

In summary:

1st Bob Icom Vertical
2nd Linda Yaesu Beam
3rd Tom Kenwood Rhombic
4th Sally Swan Dipole
5th Jim Alinco Quad
